16 teams set to participate in the 2018/2019 Super League

As previously reported on AGONAsport, Vassiliadis proposed to include 20 teams in the 2018/2019 Super League season with title/relegation playoffs, before reducing the amount of participating clubs to 12 for the 2019/2020 campaign. However, the Super League went against Vassiliadis’ idea, suggesting a different model.

Here is the statement in detail:

“At today’s meeting, the Super League’s Board of Directors unanimously came to the following decisions:

  • The 2018/2019 Super League will take place with 16 teams and without a playoff system;

  • The 2019/2020 Super League will take place with 14 teams;

  • The decision to create a Super League 2 and Football League was unanimously approved;

  • Conditions for running the Super League will be determined within the football family.

The Board of Directors, headed by the Super League president Mr. Evangelos Batagiannis, will schedule a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport Mr. George Vassiliadis in order to discuss the Super League’s unanimous decision.”

In addition, all Super League clubs are eager to find a solution concerning the teams which are currently without a broadcasting contract for the 2018/2019 season. If no resolution is found, the start of the upcoming campaign will most probably be delayed. At the moment, August 25 is the day when the Super League is supposed to begin.

On Monday, a meeting is set to take place between the Super League and Vassiliadis, however the latter is sticking to his guns and instead of receiving new proposals, he was expecting a straight response to his ideas. Below is a photograph of the letter sent by Vassiliadis to the Super League:
