Olympiacos played to a goalles draw against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the 1st leg of the UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round. The Greek Champions put on a troubling performance on both ends of the pitch and will have a lot of work to do next week in Israel for the 2nd leg.

The first half was played at a very slow pace with the only notable chance falling to Olympiacos. Hapoel seemed incapable to threaten the hosts while the Greek champions looked sloppy on both the offensive and defensive ends.

The second half continued like the first with the first chance of the half coming in the 70th minute with Fortounis’ shot that was stopped by Goresh. With the match at 0-0, Hapoel Be’er Sheva sat back and seemed content with the result. Milivojevic was denied in the 88th minute by a great save from Goresh and Hapoel’s first shot on goal was denied by Kapino in the final minute. The game ended in a 0-0 draw and the fans showed their frustration by booing the Olympiacos players at the final whistle.

Olympiacos’ performance in today’s match was possibly one of their worst showings in a European match in recent years. The Greek Champions do not seem ready for “competitive” play as they lacked creativity on the attack and did not impress in the midfield. After the match, Olympiacos President Vaggelis Marinakis had a stern talk with the team. He said “This was not a performance and this is not MY Olympiacos. If you do not qualify for the next round do not return from Israel. I will find new players. Fans came during a difficult time to see their team and you all disappointed them.”

The result is not catastrophic for the Erythrolefki as they prevented Hapoel from scoring an away goal. A goal in Israel for Olympiacos will give them the upper-hand in the second leg. The most troubling thing for the Olympiacos fans is today’s performance and if the team can change their icon within one week. The second leg is scheduled for next Wednesday, August 3rd, at 2:00 PM (EST).
