The Greek U-21 National Team came away with a late 2-1 victory over Albania to keep their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2017 alive. Albania took the lead, Ioannidis equalized before the break, and Tsilianidis scored the winner in stoppage time.

Greece hosted Albania at the Peristeri Stadium (in Athens) in a must win game for the Greeks in U-21 Euro 2017 Qualifying. The Ethniki Elpidon dominated the match but Albania took the lead in the 22nd minute. From that point on, our neighbors “vanished” from the game and Greece took control. Greece was awarded a penalty late in the half, leading to Shkalla’s sending off, and Ioannidis equalized from the spot.

The Galanolefki continued to dominate in the second half and created multiple chances to take the lead. In the 85th minute, Greece lost their man advantage after Tzanetopoulos was sent off with a second yellow card. With the game heading for an unjustly draw, Tsilianidis scored a stoppage time winner to give Greece all three (important) points.

The win keeps Greece in 5th place in the group, however they are now within two points of second place, which could lead to a playoff spot. They will travel to Portugal on Tuesday to face the group leaders.
