GREEK SOCCER CUP - ROUND OF 16 (LEG 2)

A 76th minute rocket from Lucero gave Xanthi the all important away goal in their second leg match away to OFI, sending the Superleague side to the quarterfinals of the Greek Cup despite a 2-1 loss.

OFI came close to pulling off an unlikely comeback against Xanthi in their second leg Greek Cup Round of 16 fixture, after the first leg ended 1-0 in favor of Xanthi. 

The Cretan club, who were the overall better side in today’s affair, quickly pulled level on aggregate with Chanti’s goal in the 21st minute. Midway through the second half, a sloppy goal from Vouho put OFI ahead 2-0 on the night and 2-1 ahead on aggregate with just over 25 minutes remaining in the match.

The hosts seemed to control their lead quite comfortably (a score that would put them into the next round) until a superb strike from Lucero found the top corner of the net giving Xanthi the all-important away goal on aggregate in the 76th minute. The away goal put Xanthi in the driver’s seat and the final whistle confirmed their place in the quarterfinals of the competition as Lucero’s goal in Crete put Xanthi through on the away goals rule (2-2 on aggregate).

Xanthi will now face PAOK in an anticipated matchup in the quarterfinals as both teams have been in good form this season in the Superleague. OFI, who will bow out of the Cup with their heads held high, will now focus their efforts on promotion to the Superleague after a troubling start to this year’s Football League.
