It’s not often when you see a team leaving a new stadium for a much older venue. However, AEL have proven to be an exception to the rule, taking the decision to depart the AEL FC Arena in favour of the Alcazar Stadium. The news was confirmed following a meeting between AEL president Alexis Kougias and Minister for Culture and Sport Lefteris Avgenakis.

Before the 2020/2021 campaign begins, the dressing rooms, anti-doping zones and other areas of the Alcazar Stadium will be renovated, with AEL eager to use the arena for European matches if they qualify for UEFA competitions in the future. The pitch will also be replaced.

The Alcazar Stadium, built in 1965, boasts a capacity of 13,000. The AEL FC Arena had only opened its doors for use in 2010.

Kougias, who has alienated the fan base on a regular basis over the years, reportedly decided to leave the AEL FC Arena as a consequence of a conflict with the stadium’s owner. The fiery AEL president also didn’t want to continue paying the rent for the arena.

The AEL FC Arena was consistently left in a poor condition by Kougias.

At the moment, AEL occupy fourth place of the Super League relegation playouts, possessing 30 points from 28 matches.
