A Review of the Summer Signings from Cyprus to the SuperLeague

For another season, the teams of the Greek Super League acquired players from Cyprus to strengthen their respective rosters. AGONAsport.com takes a look at some of these cases and points out Thuram of Kerkyra, Avraam of Larissa, and Rosa of Panetolikos as the most successful transfers from the “Island of Aphrodite.”

Rogerio Thuram (Kerkyra): The 25-year old proved to be one of the best signings from the Cypriot League this season. After 3 seasons in Limassol with Aris and Apollon, he made a move to Kerkyra and became the star of the season for the islanders. In 23 matches, he found the back of the net on 7 occasions and as a result, many teams are interested in signing the Kerkyra man during the offseason.

Farley Rosa (Panetolikos): The Panetolikos youngster has proven himself as a quality player this season in the Superleague. In 18 appearances, the 23-year old scored two 2 goals and gave 5 assists for the Agrinio side.

Andreas Avraam (Larissa): The 30-year old fullback was one of Larissa’s best players this season making 22 appearances while scoring 2 goals and giving 2 assists. Avraam moved to Greece after multiple seasons in Cypus playing for Anorthosis, Omonoia and Apollon Limassol. Despite his good season with Larissa, Avraam will not continue with the Thessaly club as the the team’s president announced a major clean-up of the roster, releasing 12 of its current players, including Avraam.

Marios Antoniades (Panionios): The 27-year old came to Panionios from APOEL last summer and started off as the club’s first choice left back. However an injury and the improving of Tasoulis left him behind and on the bench. His lack of playing time could facilitate his return to Cyprus, with Anorthosis showing the most interest in the Cyprus international.

Thanasis Panteliadis (Atromitos): Panteliadis returned to Greece in January for Atromitos, on a loan deal from Omonoia. The 30-year old back did not see much time on the pitch with Katranis stealing the show, however he provided a valuable option off the bench and for that, could continue next season in Peristeri.

Qazim Laci (Levadiakos): The Olympiacos player had no “spot” on the APOEL roster during the first half of the season, playing on loan from the Greek champions. He ended up at Levadiakos for the second half of the season making his debut in the Super League and registered 9 appearances with the relegated club.

Matias Degra (Larissa): The Argentine was the most “inglorious” transfer from Cyprus. After his debut with Larisa, he was released from the “Vyssini” due to an incident with the club’s president Alexis Kougias.

Toni Calvo (Veria): After leaving Thessaloniki and Aris in 2011, he continued his career at Parma and then found himself for 4 seasons in Cyprus with Anorthosis. He returned to Greece over the summer for Veria, being one of few players that shined for the club this season.

Ifeani Onilo (Kerkyra): Two years ago, the Kerkyra man was “unstoppable” in Cyprus, scoring 15 goals with Ermis Aradippou. However, an injury proved to be detrimental to his “high flying” career. Before joining Kerkyra in January, he played at Aris Limassol where he made 9 appearances and scored 1 goal.
