Manolo Jimenez’s team, who are also on course for domestic double since they will face PAOK in the Greek Cup final on May 12, saw off their opponents from Levadia thanks to two goals from Tasos Bakasetas.

The Greece international midfielder opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 12 minutes following a strong start by AEK, and the 24-year-old doubled the advantage three minutes after the half-hour mark with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The victory means AEK can not now be caught  by second-placed PAOK with two matches to play, bar an extraordinary reversal of the disciplinary decision which saw the Thessaloniki club docked three points following the abandoned match between the two clubs last month.

It is an achievement which marks the end of 24 years for AEK, who also suffered a painful relegation to Greece’s third tier just five years ago due to financial problems but have become reborn under owner Dimitris Melissanidis.

AEK’s title is their first domestic league crown since the 1993/94 season, and the 12th in the club’s history.

Jimemez’s players now also have the chance to seal what will be only the third double in their history, following previous successes in 1939 and 1978, when they take on this season’s arch rivals PAOK in the final.
