AEK, Panionios handed two-game stadium bans

Both AEK and Panionios have received two-game stadium bans as a result of clashes between hooligans and police.

In late January, AEK played to a rather uneventful 0-0 draw with Olympiacos at the Olympic Stadium, but the game was overshadowed by violent clashes between hooligans and police on the OAKA’s large territory. According to reports, policemen were injured during the fight, as several flares and molotov cocktails were allegedly used by AEK fans.

It has now been confirmed that AEK have received a two-match stadium ban and a fine of 77,500 euros for the incident after video footage provided by police was analysed:

At the weekend, AEK will still play against Panathinaikos at the OAKA with their supporters in the stands, as the decision concerning the stadium ban was made too late in order for it to affect Sunday’s battle.

Instead, AEK will host Panetolikos in the second leg of the Greek Cup quarter-final and OFI in the Super League at an empty OAKA.

AEK are expected to launch an appeal against the punishment.

PANIONIOS ALSO PUNISHED

At the same time, it was confirmed that Panionios will play their next two home games behind closed doors, with the Panthers receiving a punishment for skirmishes between fans and police during their Super League match against Atromitos (1-0).

Panionios’ appeal against the decision, which was submitted last week, has been rejected by the Hellenic Football Federation Appeals Committee.

This means that Panionios will play against Xanthi and AEK inside an empty stadium in Nea Smyrni in the Super League regular season. Panionios have also received a fine of 56,500.
