In the summer, Oikonomou was signed on loan as a replacement for the departed Ognjen Vranjes, with the 26-year-old subsequently transforming into a leading figure in Athens. So far, the Greek international has made 18 appearances for AEK across all competitions, standing out with his reliable, solid showings in the centre of defence.

AEK consequently decided to pay Bologna a fee in the region of one million euros in order to sign Oikonomou on a permanent basis, with the player penning a contract with the Kitrinomavri through to 2022. The Athenians revealed the news with this official statement:

“AEK FC announces the permanent transfer of Marios Oikonomou from Bologna. The Greek defender has signed a contract until the summer of 2022.”

Previously in his career, Oikonomou has represented PAS Giannina, Cagliari, SPAL, Bari, and Bologna, while competing in six matches with the senior Greek national team after making his debut in March 2016. His value is rated at one million by Transfermarkt.
