Holding the away-goal advantage from the first leg, AEK were always in the driving seat in the tie, and they duly secured their 3-1 aggregate triumph with a routine 2-0 victory at the Olympic Stadium against Asteras Tripolis. AEK, who have reached the final of the last three Greek Cup competitions in a row, will face Super League strugglers Panetolikos in the quarter-finals.

Petros Mantalos opened the scoring in Athens within 14 minutes, before Christos Almpanis doubled AEK’s money just 180 seconds later.

THE MATCH

AEK broke the deadlock in impressive fashion.

Receiving an intelligent pass from Marko Livaja, Mantalos found himself in a great position inside the box, and he beat the opposing goalkeeper with a neat shot which was deflected in.

A lead which was quickly doubled.

In the 17th minute of proceedings, Almpanis completely escaped the attention of the static Asteras defence, subsequently sliding his low effort into the right corner when clean through.

With the tie practically done as a contest, the tempo slowed as the match progressed, as Panagiotis Tsintotas was barely tested between the AEK sticks.

Midway through the second half, Almpanis should have notched AEK’s third, but he missed the target with only Nikos Papadopoulos to beat.

It mattered little, though, as AEK easily saw out the match to secure progression.

THE TEAMS

AEK: Tsintotas, Hult, Vranjes, Svarnas, Paulinho (Bakakis 12’), Krsticic, Szymanski, Almpanis, Verde (Giakoumakis 70’), Mantalos (Sabanadzovic 90+3’), Livaja.
