Agia Sofia Stadium set to be ready for 2021/2022 campaign

The Agia Sofia Stadium, located in the Nea Filadelfeia region of Athens, is likely to be available to AEK when the 2021/2022 campaign begins.

Since 2003, when the Nikos Goumas Stadium was demolished, AEK have been using the Olympic Stadium in Marousi as their home arena. However, the Enosi are preparing to finally leave the OAKA, with their new Agia Sofia Stadium gradually nearing the conclusion of its construction process. The arena in Nea Filadelfeia is being constructed on the exact same spot where the Nikos Goumas Stadium once stood.

Originally, AEK harboured hopes of moving into the Agia Sofia during the 2020/2021 campaign, however that won’t happen. AEK are now predicted by Live Sport to switch to their new stadium in the summer of 2021 ahead of the 2021/2022 season.

Issues concerning underground work, the completion of the interior of the stadium and bureaucratic matters have delayed the grand opening.

It must be noted that AEK are planning to use the Georgios Kamaras Stadium, the home arena of Apollon Smyrnis, next season instead of the OAKA. The arena is located in Rizoupoli, a neighbourhood which is very close to Nea Filadelfeia.

Interestingly, images of the lighting scheme have recently been released, with yellow obviously the dominant colour. The colour will be switched to blue when/if the Greek national team uses the stadium in the future:

Construction work began in the second half of 2017.

AEK finished in third place of the Super League regular season with 51 points from 26 matches.
