More sophisticated technology concerning the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system looks set to be used in the championship playoffs. According to SDNA, a final decision has been taken to use a 3D hawk-eye system for offside calls in the playoffs of the Super League, but it won’t be in place for the relegation playouts. Seminars concerning the usage of the technology will be held for Super League referees during the week.

It’s predicted that the system will be used for the first round of matches which starts on Saturday, with Aris hosting OFI. On Sunday, PAOK will face Olympiacos in Thessaloniki, before AEK take on Panathinaikos at the Olympic Stadium.

The extra technology will allow for officials to make more accurate offside decisions. A similar system is being used in major European championships.

In other news, the Hellenic state confirmed that matches of the Super League playoffs and playouts will be staged behind closed doors, limiting the amount of athletes and team staff allowed inside arenas to 80. Journalists and photographers will still be permitted to work at games, though, with AEK issuing 45 accreditations for their upcoming derby against Panathinaikos.

There had previously been rumours that venues were going to be 20% full in the playoffs and playouts.

Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK, Panathinaikos, OFI and Aris qualified for the championship playoffs, while Atromitos, AE Larissa, Asteras Tripolis, Lamia, Volos NFC, Xanthi, Panetolikos and Panionios dropped into the relegation playouts.
