Anorthosis have first place to themselves again as they move three points clear of Omonoia after their 2-1 win away to AEK Larnaca on Saturday.

Nikos Kaltsas scored the only goal in the first half before Tornike Okriashvili added an insurance marker early in the second half. Although AEK mounted a comeback attempt that led to a late goal for Ivan Trickovski, it wasn’t enough as the vicitors held on for the victory. The result moves AEK to fifth place.

THE MATCH

AEK Larnaca hosted Anorthosis at the Giorgos Karapatakis AEK Arena in Larnaca. Tete looked to get the hosts off to a good start with a shot from a sharp angle, but Giorgos Papadopoulos read the play well and made the save. There was a bit of controversy when Papadopoulos raced out and put his hand on the ball outside the box. He was let off, however, when the play was whistled down as AEK were adjudged to be offside.

Anorthosis earned a corner and they made it count. Ruben Rayos played in the service, it was punched away by Tono Ramirez, but Nikos Kaltsas latched onto it and beat the Spanish keeper with a screaming volley. Ramirez could only punt the ball away in disgust, and Anorthosis led 1-0 in the 34th minute. This remained the score at halftime.

Anorthosis opened up the second half exactly the way they had hoped. Tornike Okriashvili curled a beautiful strike that Tono Ramirez could only helplessly watch sail over his shoulder and into the back of the net, making it 2-0 for Anorthosis in the 53rd minute.

AEK didn’t give up and starting pressing to get back in the match. Florian Taulemesse forced Papadopoulos to a save. Apostolos Giannou looked for Ivan Trickovski, but when the ball came to him he was hauled down. AEK wanted a penalty, but once again as earlier, the call didn’t go their way. Finally, in stoppage time, Trickovski eventually found the back of the net, finally getting one past Papadopoulos. However, they simply ran out of time, and Anorthosis hung on for the 2-1 away win over AEK Larnaca.
