Aris put last weekend’s 4-2 defeat to Olympiacos firmly behind them on Thursday evening after seeing off Xanthi 1-0 at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium in Thessaloniki - a result which tightens their grip on fifth place, while Asteras Tripolis defeated Panionios 2-0.

Bruno Gama’s solitary goal after 58 minutes proved the difference between the two teams in a closely-contested Matchday 20 affair. Aris could have doubled their advantage late on, but French forward Nicolas Duguiny hit the woodwork three minutes from time.

It mattered little as Michael Oenning’s team took the opportunity to get Sunday’s disappointing display at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium out of their system.

The result helped Aris move three points clear of both OFI in sixth and seventh-placed Atromitos and eighth-placed Xanthi, all of whom have 26 points to Aris’ 29.

Panionios’ woes continue

Meanwhile at the Theodoros Kolokotronis Stadium in Tripoli, Asteras were a team who also bounced back from a defeat - last weekend’s 3-1 reverse against PAOK at the Toumba - by claiming a straightforward 2-0 home win over strugglers Panionios.

Jeronimo Barrales and Walter Iglesias scored the goals, after 35 and 52 minutes respectively, for the home side, who had more than enough quality against a Panionios side for whome top flight survival is fast becoming a distant dream.

The win moved Tripolis on to 21 points in 12th spot, and the Arcadians are now 11 points clear of Panetolikos, who are second from bottom. Panionios prop up the table with just six points to show for their efforts so far in what is already a nightmare campaign for the Nea Smyrni club.
