Aris return to winning ways with big result in Xanthi

Aris got back to winning ways on Thursday with a narrow 1-0 away success at Xanthi in their rearranged SuperLeague contest from Matchday 15.

Savvas Pantelidis’ team claimed all three points at the Xanthi FC Arena after two matches without a win thanks to a first-half goal from Argentine forward Mateo Garcia.

The 22-year-old loanee from Las Palmas scored from close range after 37 minutes after he latched on to a cross from Migjen Basha.

Aris continued to look the team most likely to score after half-time, but chances were at a premium in a match which was low on entertainment. Nicolás Martínez almost made it 2-0 with eight minutes to go but his shot cannoned off the right post.

That miss did not matter to the Thessaloniki club, however, as they held firm to collect all three points from their trip to Pigadia, which can often be a tricky place to come and get a positive result.

The victory moves Aris into sixth place with 26 points, while Xanthi drop to seventh just two points behind.
