In Xanthi, Aris took a large step towards the quarter-finals of the Greek Cup, beating their hosts 1-0.

Aris scored with practically their first chance as Brown Ideye slotted home from point blank range in the 17th minute.

Dominant throughout, Aris should have scored a few more goals during the second half, but Giannis Fetfatzidis was denied by a brilliant save and Giorgos Delizisis flashed a header wide of the gaping left corner.

Daniel Mancini had a late marked ruled out for offside.

Aris will hope to finish the job in the return game at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium.

Panetolikos and Panionios, the two bottom Super League sides, largely matched each other in Agrinio. During the first half, Panetolikos held the initiative for the majority of the time, but Panionios were dangerous on the counter and had the best opportunities.

Receiving a cross inside the box, Olympiacos loanee Giannis Masouras appeared sure to score, but he could only hook his volley wide with the goalkeeper stranded.

Hungry for goals, Panetolikos made a powerful start to the second half, as an effort from close range was dragged off target before Matic Kotnik tipped a rising attempt over the bar.

In the 64th minute, Odysseas Lymperakis was shown a second yellow card for Panionios, but that didn’t affect the Panthers. Not long later, Sotiris Tsiloulis missed with only the goalkeeper to beat, and Dimitris Emmanouilidis then smacked the crossbar in the latter stages.

The second leg will take place in Nea Smyrni next week.
