On the final matchday of the regular season, AEL had managed to beat Asteras 3-0 at home, but the Larissa-based outfit couldn’t repeat that result this time as the visitors snatched an important 2-1 victory. As a result of their win, Asteras climb to first position of the playouts, however Atromitos do have a game in hand. AEL occupy third spot as they trail Asteras by three points.

AEL initially took the lead in the 42nd minute after they had started the match in a positive manner.

Following a goalkeeper error from Nikos Papadopoulos, the ball fell to Radomir Milosavljevic in the penalty area, who calmly headed into the gaping net.

However, on the brink of the half-time break, Jeronimo Barrales successfully converted a penalty for Asteras after he had been tripped inside the box.

Buoyed by that goal, Asteras made a strong start to the second half, subsequently gaining their first advantage of the game in the 55th minute.

Luis Fernandez was the hero for the Tripoli side, whipping a superb free kick beyond the opposing goalkeeper.

In the closing stages, AEL did apply pressure on Asteras as they searched for an equaliser, but it wasn’t to be.

Next week, AEL are scheduled to face Panetolikos in Agrinio, while Asteras will play against Panionios at home.
