Asteras Tripolis - AEK Cup match postponed

The Greek Cup round of 16 first leg match between Asteras Tripolis and AEK has been postponed for a later date.

Asteras Tripolis and AEK were scheduled to face off in their first leg matchup for the round of 16 in the Greek Cup on Wednesday evening, however, the match has been postponed. Deputy Minister of Sport and Culture, Lefteris Avgenakis, accepted the police’s request to postpone the game due to the fear of fan violence. 

On the same day, Wednesday, Olympiacos are scheduled to play away to Kalamata in the Cup. With AEK fans traveling to Tripoli on the same day, police feared the possibility of fan violence between the two clubs’ supporters. The police’s request included that there were talks of a scheduled randevu between AEK and Olympiacos fans on the Ethniki Odos (highway from Athens to Tripoli and Kalamata). 

Tripoli and Kalamata are separated by just 57 kilometers, and with the road to Kalamata passing through Tripoli, the likelihood of AEK and Olympiacos fans meeting along the way was very likely.

Olympiacos’ match away to Kalamata will take place as scheduled on Wednesday afternoon with kick-off set for 15:00 local time. A new date has not been released for the first leg matchup between Asteras Tripolis and AEK. 

An official announcement was released: 

“With the decision of the Deputy Minister of Sport and Culture, Lefteris Avgenakis, the scheduled football match for tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8, between Asteras Tripolis - AEK for the Greek Cup has been postponed at the request of the Hellenic Police and the proposal of the DEAV, to safeguard the public order.”
