Atromitos came into Tuesday’s second leg Grek Cup round of 16 match against Volos with a comfortable three-goal advantage after defeating the Thessaly side 0-3 in the first leg last week. Tuesday’s second leg was expected to be a routine match with Atromitos booking their ticket to the quarter-finals in ease. However, it was anything but easy for the Peristeri side.

Volos entered the match looking for a quick goal to put pressure on Atromitos, and they got the goal they were looking for in the 13th minute from the penalty spot. Kivrakidis brought down Tsaousis, and Guarrotxena converted to spot-kick to give Volos a 0-1 lead.

Ten minutes later, Volos were awarded a second penalty after Kahila’s handball, and again, Guarrotxena successfully converted from 11 meters to give Volos a shock 0-2 lead. To make matters worse for the hosts, Kahila was sent off for his handball offense, leaving Atormitos with 10-men and over 65 minutes left to play.

After the restart, Atromitos balanced out the match with few clear goal-scoring chances for either side. In the 71st minute, Balogiannis was sent off with a second yellow card, and Volos lost their man advantage. Things took a turn for the worse for the visitors when the game’s scorer, Guarrotxena, was also sent off with a second yellow card to leave Volos with nine men.

Atromitos took control of the final minutes and hung on for a narrow 3-2 aggregate victory to book their place into the quarter-finals of the Greek Cup.
