Atromitos Ready to Hit the ‘Restart’ Button in the Playouts

Atromitos Ready to Hit the ‘Restart’ Button in the Playouts

While the regular season may have been considered as a failure for Atromitos, the Super League playouts offer the squad a chance for redemption, and even an unlikely pathway to Europe again.

The Peristeri-based club ended the regular season in seventh spot, considerably lower than the high bar they set themselves in the last couple of years where they clinched successive top-four finishes under Damir Canadi.

This season was too ‘stop-start’ for Atromitos as they struggled to adapt to life without Canadi and several key players who served the club well in recent years such as Efthimis Koulouris and Amr Warda, to name a few.

They ended the regular season with a mere nine wins out of 26 matches, but the upcoming playouts present them with a unique and golden opportunity. Panathinaikos and Aris currently have issues of their own when it comes to participating in Europe next season, but Atromitos could well feature in Europe again next season if they finish the playoffs in seventh.

Aris have been hit by a damaging transfer ban by FIFA as a consequence of money owed to former players.

Spyros Risvanis recently summed up Atromitos’ season: “It was a mistake of ours, not the coaches, and now we play for each other”. Giannis Anastasiou paid for this and Savvas Pantelidis has subsequently  found it tough at times.

The squad does boast enough quality to finish on top of the relegation playouts which features all sides in the latter half of the standings, but consistency will be key, something which eluded them throughout the regular season.

Clearly this depends on what happens with the situations regarding Panathinaikos and Aris, but Atromitos can only look after their own results and attempt to finish seventh. They have an advantage as they will play four out of the seven games at home. They also acknowledge their mistakes on the pitch and know what needs to be done to rectify them.
