As previously reported, attendance figures in the Super League have taken a dramatic increase in comparison to recent years, and the numbers are continuing to rise. After 10 rounds of the 2018/2019 campaign, the average attendance of games in the Greek top flight now stands at 6,320, with a number of key factors playing a major role in the success.

First of all, the return of Aris and OFI to the division, two clubs which boast a large, passionate fan base, has certainly made a huge contribution. Aris, who initially made a superb start to the season, hold an impressive average attendance of 11,316 and are one of only five Super League clubs to meet or exceed the 10,000 mark.

Panathinaikos (12,006), AEK (15,119), PAOK (18,299) and Olympiacos (22,081) are the remaining four teams with average attendances over 10,000. The Panathinaikos rejuvenation is particularly fascinating. Taking into account the crippling financial problems and the unpopular move to the Olympic Stadium, many thought the young Greens would fall even further from grace, but they’ve proved the doubters wrong with superb performances. Coached by 49-year old Giorgos Donis, Panathinaikos have won back the supporters’ love with their gutsy displays, and they’re enjoying more popularity at the OAKA than at their spiritual home of the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium. The Athenians currently occupy sixth place of the standings with 15 points.

However, on the other hand, high flying Atromitos are still failing to fill their Peristeri Stadium. Guided by the canny Damir Canadi, Atromitos have been the surprise package for the second season in succession, sitting in second spot and trailing leaders PAOK by a mere two points. Nevertheless, despite their heroics, Atromitos’ average attendance in the Super League is a lowly 797, the worst in the championship. Levadiakos (902) are just above them.

Overall, the average Super League attendance of 6,320 in the opening 10 rounds is the best witnessed for eight years since the 2010/2011 season (6,807).
