As previously reported on AGONAsport, the EPO submitted its interest in hosting the final of the Europa Conference League, a new competition set to be introduced by UEFA in 2021. The EPO wants to host the final of either the 2021/2022 or 2022/2023 Europa Conference League in Greece.

Originally, the plan was to stage the final at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, Crete, but there have been severe delays in making the necessary upgrades to the arena. Reports in Greece have suggested that 12 million euros are required in order to complete the job.

Recently, it has been stated that the EPO is considering replacing the Pankritio in its Europa Conference League bid, with the organisation reportedly preparing to select a stadium in Athens instead; namely the Agia Sofia Stadium which is due to ready for use next summer. A final decision will be made in the next Board of Directors meeting.

Nevertheless, on Sunday, Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport Lefteris Avgenakis confirmed that a memorandum of cooperation has been signed with regard to upgrades to the Pankritio Stadium, denying media reports at the same time:

Greece has not hosted the final of a UEFA tournament since the final of the 2006/2007 UEFA Champions League between AC Milan and Liverpool (2-1) at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.
