Bakasetas officially signs new AEK deal until 2022

Initially, Anastasios Bakasetas was ostracized from the AEK first team after not extending his expiring contract, but he has now penned a new deal with the Athenians through to 2022.

Bakasetas, 25, has been a key figure for AEK since signing from Panionios back in July 2016, in particular scoring the two golden goals to secure the 2017/2018 Super League championship for AEK. However, in the autumn, he was removed from the team by owner Dimitris Melissanidis after Bakasetas appeared reluctant to extend his contract which would have expired in the summer.

However, after Bakasetas requested a meeting with Melissanidis, the pair settled their differences and the forward has signed a new deal with AEK until 2022. AEK revealed the news with this official statement:

“AEK FC announces the renewal of Tasos Bakasetas’ contract. The Greek international will continue to wear our jersey until at least the summer of 2022.”

In an interview with AEK, Bakasetas shared his emotions from the contract extension: “I am very happy to stay at AEK, my goal when I arrived here was to win trophies, establish myself and to become a key player. The bottom line is that I’m staying, and this is what I always wanted. I want to thank the president for the support and faith which he has shown me, and the same goes for my teammates, coaches, physiotherapists and everyone who works at the training base in Spata. For me, it’s a dream to play at the Agia Sophia Stadium, and from what we’ve seen, it will be the best arena in Greece. I can’t wait for this to happen.”

So far, Bakasetas has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, tallying four goals and one assist.

Unfortunately, on a sad note, there was a tragic event at the Agia Sophia Stadium earlier this week.

At just before 11 am on Wednesday, a builder at the site suddenly fell from scaffolding, and despite desperate attempts to save his life, he passed away as a result of his injuries. Construction organisation Dikefalos 1924 published this following statement:

“Dikefalos 1924 and the AEK family have been informed of the fatal accident which occurred at the construction site today. He was employed by the project’s contractor. At the moment, the causes of the accident are being investigated. We express our deepest sadness and sincere condolences to the family of the deceased worker.”
