Baldock being considered for future matches

George Baldock, who is currently playing for Sheffield United in the English Premier League, is being tracked by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) with a view to the future.

One may be wondering why Baldock is even a relevant topic when it concerns the Greek national team. However, while he was born in England and has an English name, he is in fact of Greek heritage with his grandfather hailing from Greece. As a result, Baldock is eligible to represent the Greek national team, especially taking into account that he has not represented England as an international player.

The latest reports have suggested that John van ‘t Schip and the EPO itself are very keen to secure the services of Baldock. Baldock himself has not ever rejected the idea of playing for Greece.

Baldock, 26, is an energetic right-back who is capable of playing further forward on the flank. This season, he has been a key player for newly-promoted Sheffield United in the Premier League, playing all 12 games so far while contributing with one goal and one assist. Transfermarkt currently rates his value at three million euros.

Many see Baldock as an ideal replacement for Michalis Bakakis on the right side of defence. At the moment, there doesn’t seem to have been any concrete discussions between the EPO and the player, but Van ‘t Schip is known to be very keen to secure the services of Baldock as his preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign intensify.

Baldock has previously played for the Milton Keynes Dons, Northampton Town, Tamworth, IBV and Oxford United.

MADRID-BASED PROSPECTS

The EPO is also closely tracking the progress of Christian Vassilakis, a 18-year-old prospect on the books of Real Madrid. Vassilakis, born in Valencia, qualifies to play for Greece through his family and has shown plenty of promise in Spain.

In 2017, Vassilakis penned a contract with Real Madrid, where he has subsequently progressed through the ranks up to the under 19 team. Playing on the right flank, he made his debut in the UEFA Youth League in late October, appearing as a substitute in the 1-0 win at Galatasaray.

Ilias Kostis of Atletico Madrid is another young Greek attracting the attention of the EPO. In July, the 16-year-old defender transferred from APOEL to Atletico, and he is highly regarded by many who have seen him play. Kostis, standing 188 centimeters tall, plays in the position of centre-back and has already been included in the under 17 Cypriot national team squad. He was born in Thessaloniki and can represent Greece.
