Olympiacos have hit hard times. Lacking any kind of stability both on and off the court, Olympiacos haven’t build up momentum in the 2019/2020 EuroLeague regular season, as they currently languish in 14th place of the standings after only winning six of their opening 17 games. Olympiacos require a drastic recovery if they are to haul themselves into the playoffs.

It must also be noted that Olympiacos failed to qualify for the EuroLeague playoffs last year.

At the moment, Kęstutis Kemzūra is the head coach, but several media sources have reported that Giorgos Bartzokas will replace him at the Olympiacos helm after the match at Valencia on Friday evening.

Bartzokas, 54, has been unemployed since he was dismissed by Khimki in January 2019. In the past, Bartzokas was the boss of Olympiacos between 2012 and 2014, inspiring the Erythrolefki to the 2012/2013 EuroLeague championship. He remains very popular among the Olympiacos fan base.

Sport FM stated that Bartzokas has agreed to sign a 2.5 year deal with Olympiacos. He is likely to lead his first training session with the team on Sunday.

Since he left Olympiacos in 2014, Bartzokas has coached Lokomotiv Kuban, Barcelona and Khimki. He was the first Greek coach to win the EuroLeague in 2013.

Bartzokas is expected to become the Olympiacos coach regardless of the club’s result against Valencia today.

REED LEAVES

Willie Reed, who only joined Olympiacos in October, has left the club after disciplinary issues within the team.

Olympiacos released this following statement:

“Olympiacos BC announces the termination of the contract with American center Willie Reed, wishing him the best of luck for the future.”

In 11 EuroLeague appearances, Reed averaged 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds, but a lack of discipline reportedly persuaded the Olympiacos management to immediately terminate his contract. Reed has subsequently denied all accusations pointed in his direction:
