The medals keep on coming for the Greek team at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin as Maria Belibasaki claimed the silver medal in the women’s 400 meter event. The Greek athlete finished with a personal best time of 50.45 seconds to set a new Hellenic record, breaking Fani Halkias time of 50.56 from 2004.

Belibasaki ran a fantastic race and came into the home stretch as the leader, but Poland’s Justyn Ersetic beat her out for the gold with a photo finish and time of 50.41. Bronze went to Holland's Lisanne de Witte with a time of 50.77 seconds.

Greece have now won five medals at the Berlin games and need just one more to tie the all-time best at a single European Championship, which came back in 2002 in Moscow with six medals. Along with Belibasaki, Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou won silver in the women’s pole vault event while Miltos Tentoglou (Long jump), Katerina Stefanidi (women’s pole vault), and Voula Papachristou (women’s triple jump) all won gold in their respective events. Greece currently sit fourth in the overall medal count.
