The under 17 Greek national team thrashed Azerbaijan in Nafpaktos, while the under 19 team comfortably defeated Albania as their respective qualifying campaigns for the 2020 UEFA European Championship began.

Greece were far too strong for Azerbaijan in the opening game of U17 European Championship qualifying. In the first half, Christos Liatsos broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, before Giorgos Koutsias and Vasilis Kitsakis increased the lead to 3-0 in the remaining nine minutes of the frame.

In the 62nd minute, Berkay Vardar did claw one back for Azerbaijan from the penalty spot, but Apostolos Christopoulos, Liatsos and Giorgos Syrmis scored further Greek goals to secure a comfortable victory.

Germany thrashed Kazakhstan 5-0 in the other Group 9 game which was played in Patras.

Greece will next play against the Kazakhs on Saturday.

The under 19 Greek national team breezed past Albania 5-1 in the first game of Group 4 in 2020 UEFA U19 European Championship qualifying. All matches are taking place in Belgium.

Panagiotis Tzimas gave Greece liftoff in the 13th minute of play. In the second half, two further goals from Giorgos Vagiannidis and Giorgos Vrakas put the game out of sight, but Albania did get on the board when Armando Dobra hit the target. Giorgos Liavas and Andreas Athanasakopoulos netted two goals in the closing stages.

Belgium defeated Iceland 3-0 in the other Group 4 match.

Greeceā€™s second game will be played on Saturday against Iceland.
