Nick Calathes’ late dagger helped Panathinaikos keep their EuroLeague playoff hopes alive as the Trifylli stole a 78-77 win against CSKA Moscow in Friday night’s showdown in the Russian capital.

Trailing by two points in the dying moments, Calathes lobbed up a prayer of a three-pointer from well-beyond the arc and with the help of the backboard managed to put Panathinaikos ahead for good with just 0.3 seconds left on the clock.

The win helped Panathinaikos improve to 13-13 on the season to pull level with archrivals Olympiacos for the final playoff spot – though Olympiacos does hold the tiebreaker with their Eternal Rivals.

Calathes’ 11 points and 9 assists were a big inspiration for Panathinaikos on the night, while Deshaun Thomas led all scorers with 12 points.

CSKA, who led by six points at halftime, were led by Sergio Rodriguez’s 23 points off the bench while Cory Higgins added 14 points in the defeat.

Panathinaikos, who struggled to keep CSKA’s schemes in the first half, put on an improved effort in the second half as the CSKA lead was cut to just one point (59-58) heading into the final frame.

Carrying the momentum, Panathinaikos hung on in the final frame until Ioannis Papapetrou found Calathes for the game-defining play as the Greek international helped Panathinaikos claim a season sweep over CSKA.

Panathinaikos, who will likely have the weekend off due to Olympiacos’ decision to forfeit this Sunday’s Eternal Derby, will hope to extend their winning streak on the continent to five games when KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz visits the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall on Wednesday night.
