Panathinaikos have secured the services of Nick Calathes for three more years after the two sides agreed to a three-year contract extension.

The new contract will extend Calathes’ stay with the Trifylli through to the summer of 2021, which will certainly help the Greek international to continue to set records in both the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague.

Calathes was rumored to have attracted suitors from the NBA, and even made the attempt of securing an NBA return by hiring an agent to represent him in the United States.

In what is his second stint with Panathinaikos, Calathes opted to do what he didn’t during his first stint with the club by re-signing with the Athenian side after his original contract expired. In 2012, Calathes left Panathinaikos to join Lokomotiv Kuban before leaving the Russian side for two-year stint with the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.

In 2015, Calathes returned to Panathinaikos and since then he has managed to help guide the Trifylli to two Basket League titles and two Greek Cups.

Pappas still considering Panathinaikos’ offer

With Nick Calathes’ services secured, the next name on Panathinaikos’ list of negotiations is Nikos Pappas as the Trifylli look to keep ahold of the Greek international’s services.

Panathinaikos had previously offered Pappas a two-year contract extension and after a brief period of hesitation from the 27-year-old now appears likely to re-sign with the club.

With no official announcement yet from Panathinaikos, and plenty of rumors of reported interested in the likes of Ioannis Papapetrou (Olympiacos) and Petteri Koponen (Barcelona), it remains unclear if Panathinaikos still fancy Pappas as a top target.

Nevertheless, should Pappas decide to remain with the club then it would certainly make things difficult for the club to acquire both Papapetrou and Koponen.
