Calathes surpasses Spanoulis to make EuroLeague history

Panathinaikos’ playmaker now owns the single-season record for most assists during the EuroLeague regular season…

Greece are back in action as they face Switzerland in an international friendly on Friday, March 23rd. Watch it LIVE from AGONAsport.com!

Nikos Calathes didn’t muster his trademark points and assist double-double as Panathinaikos snuck past Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv 76-75, but the Greek international still managed to make history on Thursday night.

Calathes notched four assists on the night, and while the four assists pale in comparison to his season average of 8.19 assists per game, Calathes’ first and second assists of the night made history.

With his first assist against Maccabi, Calathes pulled level with fellow countryman Vassilis Spanoulis for the most assists in a EuroLeague season with 201 assists.

Moments later, Calathes took the all-time record for himself by notching number 202 as Calathes made EuroLeague history with his first quarter dish to Mike James.

While it wasn’t one of Calathes’ most spectacular assists, Calathes only added to his record-breaking haul as he notched another two assists to finish the night with 204 assists on the season.

Perhaps the most incredible part of Calathes’ haul is that he managed to catch Spanoulis with still two games remaining on the season, and with Valencia Basket and AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan – two of the league’s weaker sides – Calathes has a great opportunity to pad his totals and his hold on EuroLeague history.
