Canada blanks Greece in Brisbane

Canada defeats Greece 3-0 on the first day of play at the inaugural ATP Cup in Brisbane.

In the opening singles match, world number 487 Michail Pervolarakis took on world number 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian comfortably took the match in straight sets, 6-1 6-3, to give Team Canada a 1-0 lead overall.

In the second singles match, world number six Stefanos Tsitsipas faced world number 15 Denis Shapovalov. Coming into the match, the Canadian led the head-to-head 2-1. The Greek held a set point while up 5-4 in the first set, but was unable to convert. The set was ultimately decided by a tiebreak, which Shapovalov won 8-6. Both players then had chances to break serve in the second set, but that set would also go to a tiebreak. Once again, Shapovalov prevailed, this time by a score of 7-4. This clinched the win for Team Canada, as they went up 2-0 overall.

Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov teamed up for the doubles rubber, while Pervolarakis and Petros Tsitsipas played for Greece. The Canadians cruised to a 6-2 6-3 win to clinch the tie 3-0 for Team Canada.

Greece will now face Germany on January 5 at 5:30 PM local time (9:30 AM Greece time).
