The scandal between Olympiacos and PAOK is gradually nearing its conclusion. On Thursday morning, it was confirmed by the CAS that the trial will be held on July 6, with the two organisations anxiously awaiting the outcome. The result of the investigation will naturally have a huge effect on the future of football in Greece.

Earlier this year, PAOK were found guilty of being involved in a multi-ownership case with Xanthi, with the club subsequently receiving a seven-point deduction from the 2019/2020 Super League standings. Nevertheless, adamant of their innocence, PAOK decided to take the matter to the CAS as they attempt to clear their name of any wrongdoing.

For their part, Olympiacos submitted an appeal to the CAS against the decision of the Hellenic Football Federation, instead demanding for PAOK and Xanthi to be demoted to the second tier. Interestingly, towards the back end of May, Olympiacos’ request to analyse PAOK’s appeal file was denied.

It’s worth remembering that the Hellenic government controversially abolished the relegation punishment for multi-ownership after PAOK and Xanthi had been charged with the violation.

After two rounds of the 2019/2020 Super League playoffs, Olympiacos occupy first position with 72 points, while PAOK are down in third with 53 points on the board.
