The outlook doesn’t look bright for Xanthi. At the moment, they are sitting in eighth place of the Super League table with 26 points from 19 games, but an accusation of illegally transferring their shares in March 2019 has put their top-flight status at risk. If found guilty of the violation, Xanthi are predicted to be punished with relegation, with all of their remaining games in the current campaign to be set at 0-3 technical defeats.

The decision will be released on Monday 27 January.

There is confusion surrounding Xanthi’s results which have already been achieved in the 2019/2020 Super League season. In the event that their previous 19 matches were voided as 0-3 losses, with Xanthi’s respective opponents all receiving three points each, the standings would naturally be affected. The Super League Board of Directors will call an emergency meeting to sort out this issue if Xanthi are proven guilty.

It must be noted that this particular situation does not involve PAOK. If Xanthi are found guilty of transferring their shares without informing the authorities within the given 10-day period, only they will be punished, not PAOK.

PAOK only face problems if the courts discover a direct ownership link between Xanthi and the Dikefalos tou Vorra. Ivan Savvidis has been accused of owning both PAOK and Xanthi.

Xanthi will be sentenced to last place of the Super League if found guilty. As a result, either the championship playoffs or the relegation playoffs will be a team short, and it’s unknown how the Super League will cover this loss. Of course, Xanthi will have the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a process which promises to be lengthy.

Either way, if Xanthi are punished with relegation, utter chaos is around the corner again. A mess which the Super League does not need with the playoffs soon approaching.
