Comfortable win against Italy in Athens

FRIENDLY MATCH

Greece comfortably defeated Italy in the opening match of the Acropolis Tournament, claiming a confident 83-63 triumph at the OAKA Indoor Hall.

After the Aegean Tournament was held on the island of Crete, players of the Greek national team have returned to Athens, with the Acropolis Tournament forming the next stage of preparation for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. The next game will take place against Turkey at 20:30 local time on Saturday.

Once again, NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo led the team in scoring against the Italians, tallying 18 points while Giorgos Printezis (12), Nick Calathes (11) and Giannoulis Larentzakis (11) also reached double figures. Calathes also dished out seven assists.

THE MATCH

Greece immediately gained a large lead in the first period. Outscoring Italy 27-13, the Greeks were pleasing the Athenian crowd with their impressive play, easily finding ways to the basket.

However, to their credit Italy did regroup as the game progressed, only losing the second frame by seven points and winning the third by three.

The Episimi Agapimeni then won the final period 18-16 to seal the morale-boosting win.
