Dabizas linked with Newcastle job as takeover looms

If reports from England are to be believed, Nikos Dabizas could make a return to Tyneside after being linked with the Director of Football role at Newcastle in the event of the sale of the club.

As rumours of a financial takeover at Newcastle continue to make headlines in the United Kingdom, former Magpie Nikos Dabizas has been caught-up in the speculation.

A report in The Chronicle suggests that Newcastle’s prospective new owners have lined-up Dabizas as one of the candidates to interview for the Director of Football role once the sale of the 127-year-old club is finalized.

Reports in the English press have linked Newcastle to a £300m takeover as it appears long-time owner Mike Ashley will finally sell the club he took charge of in 2007. Financier Amanda Staveley is leading a bid which involves Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and the Reuben Brothers – the second richest family in the UK according to the Sunday Time Rich List.

Dabizas, 46, spent five years at Newcastle as a player from 1998 through to 2003 before moving on to Leicester City prior to EURO 2004. Adored by the fans at St James’ Park, one of Dabizas’ best moments in a Newcastle shirt was when he bundled in a header in the 1-0 derby win over Sunderland in 2002.

Since his retirement in 2011, Dabizas has served as Technical Director at both Panathinaikos (two stints) and Omonoia.

In his last stint, Dabizas was sacked from his post at Panathinaikos back in October after the club’s majority shareholder, Giannis Alafouzos, attributed the Trifylli’s underwhelming summer transfer window and subsequent slow start to the season to Dabizas.

The report in The Chronicle claims that Dabizas is keen to return to England and that the Amyntaio-native retains representation in England in the form of Paul Monaghan, an agent with Newcastle-based St James’ Square Sports Management.

It might not be that strange for Dabizas to look for opportunities close to one of his former employers as his son, Kostas, currently plays for Newcastle Benfield – a club based in Newcastle upon Tyne playing in the Northern League Division One.
