Earlier this week, Olympiacos took a major step towards the qualification playoffs of the UEFA Champions League, defeating Basaksehir 1:0 in Turkey with Giorgos Masouras scoring and Jose Sa heroically saving a last-gasp penalty. Olympiacos are now major favourites to progress next week when hosting the decisive second leg at the intimidating Karaiskakis Stadium.

The 1:0 scoreline is certainly a positive sign for Olympiacos. In the past, Olympiacos have won the first leg of seven knockout match-ups by a score of 1:0 on the road, emerging victories in six of those seven ties. The only occasion when Olympiacos lost the tie after initially winning the first game 1:0 away from home was against Metalist Kharkiv (1:2) in the 2011/2012 UEFA Europa League Round of 16.

Olympiacos are now undefeated in 13 successive UEFA qualifying matches since conceding an 0:1 defeat to Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League on August 3, 2016. Here are all of these 13 games:

Olympiacos - Arouca, 1:0 (A), 2:1 ET (H)

Olympiacos - Partizan, 3:1 (A), 2:2 (H)

Olympiacos - Rijeka, 2:1 (H), 1:0 (A)

Olympiacos - FC Luzern, 4:0 (H), 3:1 (A)

Olympiacos - Burnley, 3:1 (H), 1:1 (A)

Olympiacos - Viktoria Plzen, 0:0 (A), 4:0 (H)

Olympiacos - Basaksehir, 1:0 (A)

At the same time, this was Pedro Martins’ eighth European victory at the Olympiacos helm since joining the club in the summer of 2018, and he now only trails Dusan Bajevic (14) and Ernesto Valverde (11) in terms of continental victories for Erythrolefki head coaches:

These are Martins’ eight European triumphs with Olympiacos:

Olympiacos - Luzern, 4:0

Luzern - Olympiacos, 1:3

Olympiacos - Burnley, 3:1

Dudelange - Olympiacos, 0:2

Olympiacos - Dudelange, 5:1

Olympiacos - AC Milan, 3:1

Olympiacos - Viktoria Plzen, 4:0

Basaksehir - Olympiacos, 0:1
