Donis banned for one month

As a result of his actions in the recent match against PAOK, Panathinaikos boss Giorgos Donis has been handed a one-month ban.

Panathinaikos will have to cope without Donis in the dressing room or on the touchline for the next month. Last week, Panathinaikos conceded a late penalty against PAOK in Thessaloniki, with the opponents subsequently converting the ensuing spot-kick to salvage a 2-2 draw. Particularly infuriated by the decision to indicate five minutes of stoppage time, Donis publicly criticised the standard of officiating after the game finished and was accused of pushing the fourth official.

It has now been confirmed that Donis will be banned from entering the dressing room or standing on the touchline in all of Panathinaikos’ matches for one month:

Both Donis and Panathinaikos have also been charged with a fine amounting to 5,000 euros.

The ban was put in place on November 7, meaning it will end a day before Panathinaikos face Volos NFC on December 8.

These are the matches which Donis will miss:

Panathinaikos - AEK (November 10, Super League)

Panetolikos - Panathinaikos (November 24, Super League)

Panathinaikos - Asteras Tripolis (December 1, Super League)

Panathinaikos - Panachaiki (December 5, Greek Cup)

“There was an argument with the fourth official, but I didn’t push him,” said Donis in his pre-match briefing ahead of the upcoming derby against AEK. “I touched him, but there was no push. Everyone on the bench needs to keep their nerves in check. We must now make sure that the players clearly understand the instructions before the game begins.”

The Athens-based club will appeal the decision.

Panathinaikos currently occupy 10th place of the Super League standings with nine points from nine games.
