On Monday, the EOK released this following statement:

“We would like to inform you that after the Board of Directors meeting on 4 May 2020, it’s been confirmed that 2019/2020 basketball championships will not continue. This is due to the problems created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the relevant instructions by the Health Committee of the government.

“With regard to the staging of the final phase of the Panhellenic championships, the position of the Health Committee will be required, taking into account the athletes’ entering of universities.

“The Board of Directors will address the issue of the final rankings of the leagues, taking into account the positions and proposals of the teams.”

The abandonment of the season concerns both male and female competitions. It had already been confirmed by ESAKE that the 2019/2020 Basket League season wasn’t going to be resumed.

However, considering the manner in which the season has been brought to a close, it’s now uncertain whether any teams will be relegated and promoted between the Basket League and Second Division. Reports have recently suggested that no teams will suffer demotion from the Basket League.

On the other hand, however, it has been rumoured that Olympiacos will return to the Basket League in the 2020/2021 season. An Olympiacos academy team participated in the Second Division during the current campaign after the Erythrolefki purposely got themselves relegated last year as a consequence of numerous scandals.

The Basket League is still yet to resolve the pressing issue of player salaries
