EPO confirm staging of promotion playoff

Despite both Apollon Smyrnis and Xanthi appealing against the decision, the promotion/relegation playoff between the sides will take place at the end of the month, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) has confirmed.

It is now certain that the relegation/promotion playoff will be held this month. As previously reported on AGONAsport, the EPO had already made the call to stage the duel in August, but Apollon Smyrnis and Xanthi subsequently appealed against the decision. The two clubs have openly voiced their disapproval of the EPO’s somewhat chaotic handling of the situation.

However, after their appeals were rejected by the EPO Appeals Committee this week, the staging of the playoff has now been finalised. The two Apollon Smyrnis - Xanthi games will be held on the 22nd and 29th of August.

This development also confirms that 14 clubs will participate in the 2020/2021 Super League season.

In the 2019/2020 Super League, Xanthi claimed 13th position to avoid direct relegation, while Apollon Smyrnis finished in second spot of the Super League 2. Nevertheless, due to the Super League 2 being cancelled as a consequence of the coronavirus crisis, Apollon haven’t played a game since the first half of March. Xanthi’s last match in the Super League was staged on July 18 against AE Larissa on the road.

The 2020/2021 Super League campaign is scheduled to begin on September 12.
