EPO to choose between six arenas for Nations League

The Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) has submitted the list of six arenas which can be used by the national team during the UEFA Nations League.

In accordance with UEFA rules and regulations, which state that national associations must submit the list of possible home arenas four or five months before the relevant competition begins, the EPO has sent Europe’s governing body the names of the six stadiums which are in line to host matches of the Greek national team in the 2020/2021 Nations League.

These following venues have been shortlisted by the EPO:

Olympic Stadium (Athens)

Georgios Kamaras Stadium (Athens)

Karaiskakis Stadium (Piraeus)

Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium (Thessaloniki)

Toumba Stadium (Thessaloniki)

Pankritio Stadium (Heraklion)

At the moment, the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium is reportedly the favourite to be picked, with Aris’ ground known for being one of the loudest in Greece. However, if the Nations League will take place behind closed doors as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, there is a chance that the hugely unpopular Olympic Stadium in Athens will continue to be used as the home of the Ethniki Omada. Players and coaches have both openly expressed their dislike of the empty OAKA which lacks atmosphere.

Reports had previously suggested that the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus was in line to be selected by the EPO again. The final decision concerning the home arena for the Nations League will be made in July.

Greece were drawn into Group 3 of League C alongside Kosovo, Moldova and Slovenia.

As it stands, the Nations League is still scheduled to begin in September, but it will almost certainly be postponed to a later date as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.
