With the new UEFA Nations’ League beginning again this coming September, the Greek national team remains without a permanent home stadium to play their matches in.

While the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, Crete, was selected last year as Greece’s home for the next four years, there have been delays in upgrading the venue to be able to host the national team’s matches. Specifically, the building of a roof covering the stands has not begun at all. Even though the Pankritio was selected over a year ago, the proper authorities have not yet completed the bidding process for which company will undertake the construction.

These delays make it difficult to see how the Ethniki will be able to host its first home games for the Nations’ League in October against Moldova and Kosovo. That is if the competition kicks off on schedule with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

If the Crete ground is deemed not ready by October, then it could well be that Greece would have to return to the Olympic Stadium in Athens for home matches. That is not a solution that the players agree with, however with no other venues deemed suitable in Thessaloniki and the problems with playing at the Karaiskakis Stadium well documented in recent years, it appears likely that the Olympic Stadium would be the most likely candidate.
