Extra technology on the table to determine offside line  

Extra technology, which will be able to determine the offside line more accurately, is set to soon be introduced to Greek football.

The video assistant referee (VAR) system has been in full use in the Super League since the 2019/2020 campaign began. However, there have been several scandals involving VAR mistakes this season, with Petros Mantalos’ disallowed goal in the AEK - PAOK match and Hillal Soudani’s marker during the Volos NFC - Olympiacos game having caused plenty of controversy. At the recent meeting between the owners of AEK, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and PAOK in Athens, the VAR topic was touched upon, with Evangelos Marinakis in particular noting that the technology has not helped erase refereeing mistakes.

It now seems that a more sophisticated system, which determines whether a player was offside, will be introduced to the game in Greece. 

The 3D hawk-eye technology, currently being used in the English Premier League, will soon be on its way to Greek football. You can take a look at the entire workings of the system by reading a detailed breakdown on the Premier League’s official website.

There is a realistic goal that it will be in place for the Super League championship and relegation playoffs.

According to several reports, the new offside line technology will cost between 900-1,000 euros per matchday, an amount which is set to be covered by the Ministry of Digital Policy instead of the Ministry of Sport. The Hellenic Football Federation, FIFA and UEFA will not cover any of the costs.

More developments in connection with this matter are expected to be released in the near future.
