First loss for Olympiacos

Olympiacos finally suffered their first loss of the 2019-20 LEN Champions League campaign, falling 13-9 at Croatia’s Jug Dubrovnik.

After Olympiacos had beaten Jug Dubrovnik 6-5 in Greece back in December, the Croats were seeking to avenge that loss as they were playing at home this time around. The Erythrolefki took an early 1-3 lead, however, the Croats then found themselves ahead 4-3 after the first period of play. A dominant second period saw the hosts take a 9-4 lead going into halftime.

Jug Dubrovnik then led 11-7 after the third period, before ultimately winning 13-9. Olympiacos’ top scorers were Maro Jokovic and Stefan Mitrovic, each with two goals. It should also be noted that Greek national team player Alexandros Papanastasiou scored one goal for his Croatian club against Olympiacos. 

Olympiacos are now tied for first place (out of eight teams) in Group A along with Barceloneta, who they will face in their next Champions League match on February 22. The two clubs drew 11-11 in Spain in December, and will now play in Greece this time. Both clubs have 19 points, while Jug Dubrovnik are closely behind in third place with 18 points.
