As expected, the Greek U21 national team had an easy task at hand in their opening UEFA U21 Euro 2021 qualifier against San Marino as the Ethniki Elpidon marched on to a 5:0 victory at the Georgios Kamaras stadium in Rizoupoli. Both Argyris Kampetsis (26, 68) and Vangelis Pavlidis (29, 37) notched two goals while Marios Vrousai found the back of the net in the 51st minute.

The result moves Greece up to three points along with Lithuania (have already defeated San Marino) and the two teams will face off in Greece’s next qualifier on September 10th. Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Scotland have yet to play a match in the 2021 qualifying campaign.

THE MATCH

Greece took control of the game early on and it was a matter of time before the hosts would find the opening goal. The fixture’s first marker came in the 26th minute as Argyris Kampetsis headed home Abdul Rahman Weiss’ cross to give Greece the lead.

Willem II star, Vangelis Pavlidis, then made his presence known with two goals in the span of eight minutes. The 20-year-old took advantage of a mistake from Cechetti to give Greece a 2:0 lead in the 29th minute (assisted from Dimitris Limnios) and Alexandros Katranis then set up Pavlidis, who struck from the top of the penalty area to increase Greece’s lead to three in the 27th minute.

After the restart, Pavlidis’ teammate at Willem II, Marios Vrousai, added his name to the scoresheet after he brillianty controlled the ball with his chest and unleashed an unsavable shot in the 51st minute.

The five-star performance was capped off with the game’s first scorer, Kampetsis, finding the back of the net yet again with his strike in the 68th minute.
