Foreign officials set to referee Greek Cup final

For the first time since 1975, a foreign referee is set to take charge of Saturday’s Greek Cup final between AEK Athens and PAOK at the Olympic Stadium.

Watch LIVE from AGONAsport the Greek Cup Final between AEK & PAOK on Saturday, May 12th.

On Wednesday evening, information appeared in the media suggesting a foreign referee will be appointed for the upcoming Greek Cup final on Saturday, when AEK and PAOK meet at the OAKA. Following the scandal during a Super League match between the two clubs in Thessaloniki, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) are eager to do its best in order to prevent any trouble, with this game set to decide whether the organisation remains a member of FIFA and UEFA.

Although the reports have not yet been confirmed by the EPO, it’s widely expected that a foreigner will be the man in the middle on Saturday. Vitor Melo Pereira, who works in the EPO’s refereeing department, has already contacted the referee and his assistants in connection with judging the Greek Cup final, and an official announcement is due to be made on Thursday. According to SDNA, the officials are of the highest level and have refereed UEFA Champions League matches.

The last occasion when a foreign referee worked over a Greek final was in 1975, a match in which Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos 1:0.
