Fortounis apologies for bad behaviour

Kostas Fortounis, who had been cast aside by Pedro Martins in recent matches, has apologised to his Olympiacos teammates for his behaviour.

At the start of the year, Fortounis made his grand return from a long-term injury, but he subsequently fell out of favour after displaying his anger for remaining on the bench during a hugely important 1-0 victory at PAOK in the Super League.

Fortounis was left out of the Olympiacos squad for the second leg of the UEFA Europa League tie against Arsenal and the league game with Panetolikos at the weekend.

Nevertheless, according to reports, Fortounis has issued an apology to all of his Olympiacos teammates.

“I want to apologise to everyone,” stated Fortounis on Sunday morning, before Olympiacos defeated Panetolikos 2-0 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in the evening. “What I did was a mistake. As a leader, whether I play or not, I want the team to win. I am very proud of what we achieved against PAOK and Arsenal! Let’s leave the past behind and move on. Once again, I am sorry, no one is above Olympiacos.”

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder then held a private conversation with Martins.

Fortounis is now expected to be included in the Olympiacos team for the upcoming Greek Cup semi-final against PAOK on Wednesday. The first leg will take place in Thessaloniki.

Since returning from injury, Fortounis has made eight appearances for Olympiacos, scoring the one goal in the domestic championship.

MARTINS REPORTEDLY SET TO BE OFFERED NEW CONTRACT

At the same time, reports have suggested that Olympiacos are preparing to offer Pedro Martins a new contract, with the Portuguese manager seemingly steering the Erythrolefki to the Super League title while having also taken the club into the Last 16 stage of the Europa League.

His current deal with Olympiacos is due to expire in the summer.

The two parties are predicted to reach an agreement, despite Martins’ future wish to coach a team in England.
