Fortounis, 27, has recently returned to action following his recovery from the anterior cruciate ligament injury which he suffered in the summer. However, if reports from the likes of gazzetta.gr and Sport FM are to believed, the attacking midfielder has now fallen out of favour with Pedro Martins.

On Sunday, Fortounis was angry with Martins for leaving him out of the team to face PAOK in Thessaloniki, a match which Olympiacos won 1-0. Fortounis remained on the bench as Olympiacos extended their lead at the top of the Super League table to a commanding five points.

Gazzetta.gr also revealed that Martins is demanding more from Fortounis both in games and training sessions.

“Two players are not available, but one player has stayed at home purely based on our own decision,” said Martins when speaking in preparation for the Europa League duel against Arsenal in London. “No one is above Olympiacos.”

Fortounis didn’t travel to the United Kingdom.

Last week, Fortounis appeared as a substitute in the first match against Arsenal, emerging from the bench in the 65th minute of play. Olympiacos eventually lost the match 1-0 inside the packed Karaiskakis Stadium.

It appears that Martins has decided to set an example for the rest of the team by leaving Fortounis in Greece. However, if the matter isn’t resolved soon, it could quickly escalate and create an unnecessary problem for the Erythrolefki as they edge closer to their maiden Super League title since 2017.

Since returning from injury, Fortounis has made eight appearances for Olympiacos, scoring the one goal in the domestic championship. Fortounis and Martins had previously been in good relations.

Olympiacos will take on Panetolikos at the weekend in the final round of the Super League regular season. It remains to be seen if Martins will give Fortounis a chance to redeem himself ahead of the upcoming playoffs.
