Fortounis rehabilitation progressing in positive fashion

Fortounis rehabilitation progressing in positive fashion

The serious injury to Olympiacos star Kostas Fortounis has been temporarily forgotten in recent weeks thanks to the exploits of the club in the Champions’ League qualifiers. The Erythrolefki put together a superb run in the qualifiers and then play-offs to book a spot in the world’s premier club competition.

Those exploits had seen the initial shock of Fortounis’ injury fade, but inside the Piraeus club there has been an intense focus on providing the best care to the team’s top player. Olympiacos and its supporters have been buoyed recently by the news that Fortounis’ rehabilitation is progressing at a good rate.

After going down with a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury in the July preseason friendly versus Hamburg, the prognosis was that Fortounis would be out for six months. That initial estimate has reportedly not changed. However, the player’s and team’s worst fears of a longer spell on the sidelines have been quelled in the month since the injury. Since then, Fortounis has undergone successful surgery under the watchful eye of Olympiacos doctor Christos Theos. After a brief period of rest and recuperation, the player recently returned to the clubs Rendi training ground completely focused on his rehabilitation. Theos stated after the surgery that the procedure was only 50% of the battle and that the rehab process would represent the other half of Fortounis’ long road back to the pitch.

The early reports are as positive as could be and thus far Fortounis is hitting his targets. With Olympiacos’ season beginning so well, there will be that much less pressure on the rushing the player back. Instead, Olympiacos will undoubtedly proceed cautiously with the player and give him the required care and time to return to the pitch having fully recuperated. It continues to appear that the aim is for the Greek international to return to pitch in the early part of 2020.
