Fortounis, 27, has been on the sidelines since pre-season, when he suffered the anterior cruciate ligament injury during a friendly against Hamburg. However, having fully recovered after months of treatment, the gifted attacking midfielder is predicted to make a return to competitive football on Wednesday when Olympiacos host Kalamata at the Karaiskakis Stadium in the Last 16 of the Greek Cup. Olympiacos lead the tie 2-0 after winning the first leg on the road.

“All of the signs are showing that Fortounis will be able to play a few minutes against Kalamata,” revealed Pedro Martins after Olympiacos defeated Lamia 4-0 in the Super League at the weekend. “We have been planning this for two months, we’re waiting for this opportunity. We want all of our injured players to return so that we have a fully healthy team again.”

Fortounis, who is valued at 10 million euros by Transfermarkt, enjoyed a superb campaign in the 2018/2019 season, registering an impressive 17 goals and 16 assists in 43 matches across all competitions.

In other injury news, Portuguese winger Daniel Podence will miss the games with Kalamata and Aris after receiving a knock against Panathinaikos, but he should be back to face OFI in Heraklion on January 22. Algerian attacker Hillal Soudani will be available to play against Aris, while Brazilian midfielder Guilherme will definitely be fit again for the Super League derby with AEK at the Olympic Stadium on January 26.
