French future of Koulouris and Donis uncertain

With the 2019/2020 Ligue 1 season over as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, the future of Efthymis Koulouris and Tasos Donis is uncertain.

Just like in the Netherlands, the French government decided to ban all sporting competitions until September, meaning that the Ligue 1 season was terminated with Paris Saint Germain being crowned champions. Furthermore, the decision affected two Greek players, with Efthymis Koulouris playing for Toulouse and Tasos Donis representing Reims.

Having only picked up a dreadful total of 13 points, Toulouse have suffered relegation, while Reims gained 41 points to finish in sixth place of the table.

KOULOURIS DRAWING INTEREST

Toulouse’s relegation to Ligue 2 has dramatically increased the chances of Koulouris leaving. Overall, it was an underwhelming season in France for Koulouris in terms of the statistics, as he only managed to score four goals and dish out two assists in Ligue 1. Toulouse signed the 24-year-old from PAOK last summer for 3.5 million euros.

Despite his patchy form, however, Koulouris has drawn interest from Dutch, English, German, Italian and Turkish teams. The possibility of Koulouris even returning to Greece has been ruled out with the player eager to continue developing in Europe’s strongest championships.

Naturally, Koulouris doesn’t particularly want to play in Ligue 2, and it’s even possible that he will be loaned out by Toulouse for the 2020/2021 campaign. The striker is valued at 2.4 million by Transfermarkt.

Koulouris has not scored in any of his 15 games for the senior national team.

DONIS DEAL COMPLICATED

Donis, 23, moved on loan to Reims from VfB Stuttgart in September 2019, with a mandatory purchase option included in the deal. A report from Sport 24 has revealed that Reims are obliged to pay Stuttgart a grand total of eight million for Donis which will be spread out across separate installments. Three million of that sum are guaranteed bonuses which will be paid in the future.

Reims initially paid Stuttgart 590,000 to loan Donis.

However, Reims and Donis don’t want to continue working together. Interestingly, Reims missed the chance to part with Donis in the winter transfer window, with the deal stating that the French outfit were only obliged to purchase the Greek striker if they kept him until the end of the current season.

Failing to settle in France, Donis endured a miserable debut campaign with Reims, not registering a single goal or assist in 20 appearances across all competitions. According to reports, Donis isn’t happy at all in France, and he isn’t against moving back to parent club Stuttgart who are competing in the second tier of German football.

It now remains to be seen if all involved parties can reach an agreement which will consequently allow Donis to return to Stuttgart. Nevertheless, that won’t be easy to achieve, especially given that the striker reportedly earns 900,000 per annum.

Transfermarkt rates Donis’ value at two million. He has scored one goal in 11 matches for the senior Greek national team.
